A field of vision where motifs abound
Keisei Sasaki, the illustrator behind muraco’s concept books and T-shirts, hails from Sayama City in Saitama Prefecture. In boyhood days, he would head for the Naguri River in Hanno City with his friends and family in the summer and enjoy river rafting with an inflatable. These days, he enjoys climbing lofty 1,000m+ peaks, mainly in Nagano, Yamanashi, and Gunma.
While based in Tokyo, Sasaki-san still visits his parents in Sayama at least once a month. On this particular day, he took his paints and brushes and set up a tarp in a park along the Iruma River, a place close to his heart. Since he usually illustrates indoors on a computer or tablet, he had not put brush to canvas outdoors since sketching at elementary school.
“In my illustrations for work, I often draw images and other motionless objects as motifs, but when I go outside as in this case, the motifs unfold in front of me; for example, a tree is swaying while I attempt to draw it. It’s nice to paint in the flowing air, which gives me a totally different sensation. I might try painting outside again next time I go camping somewhere like Lake Sagami.”
“The new chair from muraco is very comfy, and is also very versatile in terms of different sitting postures” explains Sasaki-san, who felt a nostalgic yet refreshing breeze when he first sat down to paint in it.
