Fukui
Connecting the Future;
Historical Saba Kaido
The Saba Kaido or Mackerel Road was a food transporting artery linking Wakasa Bay located in Obama, Fukui and passing through Shiga before arriving in Kyoto. The road covers approximately 70km before arriving at Demachiyanagi in Kyoto where a stone marker and willow tree await to greet the brave travelers upon their arrival. The road winds over mountains, through forests, along rivers, past many temples and old Japanese houses before arriving at Japan’s ancient capital. This Old Japanese Highway is one of Japan’s most beautiful as well as one of it’s lesser known ancient paths.
