In Search of History, Culture and Food on the Kunisaki-Hantou Minemichi Long Trail
Kunisaki and Bungo Takada, Oita Prefecture
A syncretism of Shintōism and Buddhism, Rokugou-Manzan culture was formed on the Kunisaki Peninsula which became a mecca for mountain worship. The Kunisaki-hantou Minemichi (“ridge road”) Long Trail is a hiking route that includes paths of ascetic practices, allowing visitors to understand the history of the Peninsula. On our trip along this storied trail, we focus on the Rokugo Manzan culture preserved in the environs. We also experience traditional agriculture and forestation of this region which has been designated a World Agricultural Heritage site.
