Yukihito Kanai of Kanai Kogei is a color dyer who has continued to pioneer new fields while retaining the traditional techniques of mud dyeing handed down in Amami. While embodying formless "color" into "objects", he explores new expressions of color through collaborations with various artists. Works created through these connections will be showcased this time at OUTDOOR GALLERY. The exhibition will highlight the power of color and the allure of colors created by the bounty of nature through fabrics, photographs, crafts, and more.
Yukihito Kanai Textile dyer Yukihito Kanai was born in 1979 in Amami Oshima. He is the second-generation proprietor of Kanai Kougei, specializing in dorozome (mud dyeing) and other traditional natural dyeing techniques used to make Oshima Tsumugi. Yukihito ventures beyond the concept of a traditional craft, however, and explores new values of dyeing by working with materials other than fabric, such as bone and coral, and collaborating with creators and fashion labels.
