Paradise Calling
Livin’ & Working in MIYAKOJIMA
vol.1

Miki Shimoji

A lifestyle infused with the scent of travel

The island of Miyakojima, a flat expanse of land covering approximately 204 square kilometers, is home to about 55,000 people. Among them are those who were so captivated by the island that they chose to move, as well as those who left their homeland, only to return later in life. Let’s take a closer look at the lives of four individuals who now call Miyakojima their humble abode.

The more I immerse myself, the more opportunities I find

Miki Shimoji was born on Miyakojima and lived here until the second grade. After starting her career with a foreign airline in Tokyo, she decided to make a change, seeking a more peaceful work environment. While exploring job opportunities across Okinawa, she came across her current role and, almost serendipitously, found herself back in her hometown of Miyakojima.

For her daily PR duties at the airport, Shimoji wears kariyushi (Okinawan-style) attire and sometimes works in English and Chinese.
Her living room is adorned with magnets collected from over 50 countries she has visited.

Shimoji’s favorite way to start the day is brewing coffee while waiting for the sunrise. She heads to the beach in the pre-dawn darkness, savoring the peaceful stillness as she gazes at the horizon.

As the first rays of sunlight appear, she slips into the sea, floating gently as the morning sun warms her. It’s the kind of simple, magical routine that feels perfectly natural on Miyakojima but almost unimaginable in the hustle and bustle of city life.

When she heads to the beach, she always makes time for a cleanup.
The vibrant houses along the Sarahama Fishing Port are a familiar sight, and her routine includes stopping by her favorite fish market to pick up freshly prepared seafood.

“Living in Miyakojima, surrounded by its rich natural environment, has really blurred the lines between work and personal life for me. My role involves connecting the airport with the local community, and the more I immerse myself, the more opportunities I find to grow and expand my work. I love uncovering ideas for new projects in everyday moments—it’s inspired me to explore and try new things, even on my days off.”

CAFE373 & SPICES in the public market is her go-to spot, offering Sri Lankan dishes packed with local ingredients.

Shimojishima Airport

Originally used as a training airfield for pilot education, Shimojishima Airport opened its current passenger terminal in March 2019. In addition to direct domestic flights to destinations like Tokyo and Kobe, it also offers regular international flights to South Korea. The terminal is thoughtfully designed to immerse visitors in a resort-like atmosphere the moment they arrive, with touches of tropical charm throughout.
