No.50 — RIO DE JANEIRO(2016)

Bossa Nova (‘the new trend’)

By LUCAS B.B.

Brazilians have always believed that Brazil potentially can become paradise. Perhaps it’s the stunning scenery, the sheer power of nature or the overtly optimistic, vibration of the Brazilians themselves. This ‘positive’ energy is found in the sounds of many types of Brazilian music and comes to a full climax in Bossa Nova.

Bossa Nova like a sweet Caipirinha has the ability to elevate you to a state of feeling all fuzzy and warm inside. The music imbues a feeling of friendship, warmth, contentment and peace with your immediate surroundings. Bossa Nova seems to epitomize the Brazilian concept of Jeitinho Brasileiro (The ‘Brazilian way’), with it’s optimistic and carefree mood Bossa Nova is a timeless musical genre layered in love.

In this issue of Papersky we travel to the other side of the world, Rio de Janerio, to meet up with the living legends of Bossa Nova; João Donato, Roberto Menescal, Joyce Moreno, Jaques & Paula Morelenbaum, Celso Fonseca, and Daniel Jobim as well as to talk with the new talents infusing Bossa’s power into modern music.

What we found in Rio de Janerio was a direct mirror of the music : kind hearted, wonderful people and a city set against arguably the most beautiful landscape in the world. In just another three months Rio de Janerio will host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Many people reading this issue of Papersky will no doubt travel to Rio for the Olympics.

It is our hope that besides enjoying the city of Rio and the many locations we have introduced that you’ll also find a bit of time to take a trip outside of the city to experience places such as Vassouras (Coffee Valley), and Petropolis (Imperial City). In Vassouras you’ll discover the roots of Brazil’s coffee culture, and in Petropolis you’ll discover the locations where many of Bossa Nova’s famous songs were born. Boa Viagem!
