モロッコ、インスピレーションの宝庫に迷いこんで（No.26）

およそ100年にわたって、アフリカ人、ベルベル人、ユダヤ人、アラブ人、ヨーロッパ人が互いに調和しながら暮らしてきた国、モロッコ。豊かな文化をもつその国には、わらや土、木や石といった材料でみごとな作品を生みだす優秀な職人がいる。そこは砂漠や海、すばらしい建築物や庭園といった美しい景観に囲まれている。そして、満開の「砂の薔薇」とラクダのくしゃみ、ポット一杯のフレッシュなミントティーが明滅する感覚に光を与え、新鮮なアイデアと考えをインスピレーション豊かに呼び起こす。
PAPER SKYがこの小さなアフリカの国を今号の目的地に選んだのも、そのインスピレーションの力に導かれたからだ。そして、先日他界したイヴ・サンローランから、ロック・ミュージックを永遠に変えたジミ・ヘンドリクスにいたるまで、世界の偉大なアーティストの多くに影響を与えてきたのも、このモロッコのインスピレーションなのだ。今号のPAPER SKYでは、数年前にモロッコのすばらしいライフスタイルを発見して以来、この国の虜になっている有元くるみをスペシャルゲストに迎えた。
モロッコへの旅の途上、僕は蒸したラム肉を食べて人生最悪の胃けいれんに見舞われた。エッサウィラという紺碧の海岸の町をなんとか自力で歩いて、賑やかなマラケシュの病院に数時間だけ入院した。少し回復してから、僕たちは13時間かけて、マラケシュの町から世界で最も危険といわれる道のひとつを通ってアトラス山脈を越え、小さな砂漠の町メルズーガまで車を走らせた。この町に入ってからはラクダに乗って砂漠を渡り、オアシスにテントを張って、そしてみごとなアフリカのグナワ音楽に心を委ねたのだった。今号のPAPER SKYが読者の皆さんの感覚を自由に解き放ち、モロッコへの旅のきっかけになることを願って- 。

Inspirational thoughts and wandering minds
Morocco is a country where Africans, Berbers, Jews, Arabians and Europeans all have lived together in harmony for 100’s of years. It’s a culturally rich country with master craftsmen that can weave, carve and shape- straw, clay, wood and stone into brilliant creations. It’s a beautiful country with deserts, oceans and wonderful architecture and gardens. And above all it’s an inspirational country, where the blossoming of a desert rose, sneeze of a camel and the pouring of a fresh pot of mint tea all inspire the senses to flicker with light and arouse fresh ideas and thoughts.\r\nIt is Morocco’s ability to inspire that Paper Sky choose this small African country as it’s main destination for this issue. It is this same inspiration that has influenced many of the worlds greatest artists from the recently departed Yves Saint Laurent to the man that changed rock music forever Jimi Hendrix. Paper Sky’s special guest this issue is Kurumi Arimoto who discovered the wonderful lifestyle of Morocco several years ago and has been fixated ever since.
On our trip to Morocco I overcame the worst stomach cramps I’ve ever had after eating steamed lamb. I found myself barely able to walk in the bluer then blue seaside town of Essaouira and then hospitalized for a few hours in the crazy city of Marrakech. After I got better we drove 13 hours from Marrakech over the Atlas Mountains on one of the worlds most dangerous roads into the small desert town of Merzouga. Once in Merzouga we rode camels through the desert, camped in an oasis and let our minds wander to some of the most amazing African, Gnawa music. We hope this issue will help set some of your senses free and inspire you to travel to Morocco.
