But beyond the bright lights, concrete and relentless sounds there\u2019s a green side to the metropolis many have never experienced.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In an attempt to rediscover Tokyo\u2019s green spaces and its trees. Lucas Badtke- Berkow and his wife Kaori, editors of Japanese travel and lifestyle magazine \u2018Papersky\u2019, meticulously planned a trail over six months of research and discovery through Tokyo\u2019s unique and ancient trees to reflect its deep cultural history.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The route literally spirals through the city on a 60km course, passing through some of the busiest areas yet remaining calm. Avoiding busy roads where possible, opting for quieter, more idiosyncratic backstreets. The course<ins>\u2019<\/ins>s six sections are open to be cycled, hiked or run and can be explored over as many days as you like or dipped into for a single stage depending on how much of Tokyo\u2019s historic and gastronomic culture you want to sample.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9645_edit_2048-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9645_edit_2048-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9645_edit_2048-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9645_edit_2048-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9645_edit_2048-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9645_edit_2048.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Shinjuku Gyoen to Asakusa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>The feeling of the city begins to change away from <em>Shinjuku Gyoen\u2019s Sendagaya Gate<\/em> towards <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tokyo-park.or.jp\/park\/toyama\/#highLight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Toyama Park<\/a><\/em> and <em>Hakone-Yama<\/em>, the highest \u2018manmade-hill\u2019 in Central Tokyo at 44.6m (there\u2019s even a certificate for climbing it). It\u2019s a brief stop here, high amongst the cherry blossom before continuing through the undulating park and on to <em>Ana Hachimangu Shrine<\/em>, dating back to 1062. The main route veers right after the bridge, but first we deviate left towards <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.higo-hosokawa.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Higo-Hosokawa Garden<\/a><\/em>, once residence for the retainer of the Shogunate. There are winding paths through its tree filled hillside, large pond and traditional gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further along the river we pass <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.city.bunkyo.lg.jp\/b014\/p004029.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Munatsuki-Hill<\/a>,<\/em> immortalized in <em>Haruki Murakami\u2019s Norwegian Wood<\/em> on the way to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotel-chinzanso-tokyo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chinzan-s\u014d<\/a><\/em>, now part of a luxury hotel and founded in 1877. Another former samurai residence with historical monuments from across Japan, including a thousand year old pagoda from the Hiroshima mountains. The landscape is filled with many trees and plants, a waterfall and natural spring among a 500 year old <em>chinquapin<\/em> and <em>ginkgo<\/em> said to be over 300 years old. The route continues along the <em>Kanda River <\/em>promenade alongside <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.city.bunkyo.lg.jp\/b036\/p004885.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edogawa Park<\/a><\/em>, flooded with cherry blossom during March and April, eventually zig zagging through quiet residential streets with steep climbs on the typically Japanese <em>donut-roads<\/em> designed for traction in harsh weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/386A0227_edit_2048-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90035\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/386A0227_edit_2048-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/386A0227_edit_2048-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/386A0227_edit_2048-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/386A0227_edit_2048-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/386A0227_edit_2048.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pedal lightly with a pleasant breeze to the Red Gate of the University of Tokyo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/koishikawa-bg.jp\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Koishikawa<\/em>, the botanical garden<\/a> of the <em>University of Tokyo<\/em> is the birthplace of modern botanical science in Japan. Its herb garden was established by the <em>Tokugawa Shogunate<\/em> in 1684, and is home to a huge variety of 4,000 species, including giant <em>camphor,<\/em> <em>cedar, meta-sequoia<\/em> and a descendant of <em>Isaac Newton\u2019s<\/em> apple tree among many historic plants and ruins. Its hillside forest dates back over 300 years and feels more like a mountain path in the centre of Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9407_edit_2048-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9407_edit_2048-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9407_edit_2048-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9407_edit_2048-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9407_edit_2048-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A9407_edit_2048.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few kilometers further on we reach the university campus, entering the historic <em>Akamon Gate<\/em>, riding along the famous <em>ginkgo<\/em> lined avenue through old gothic arches leading to the 300 year old <em>ginkgo-biloba <\/em>adjacent to the Faculty of Engineering. Outside the university grounds we immediately get off the busy high street and on to some more peaceful, tree filled roads leading on to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/nedujinja.or.jp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nezu Shrine<\/a><\/em>, where prestigious samurai residences make way for a more humble area of the city. Developing around the shrine during the Edo period, old wooden houses and narrow alleys remain, creating a unique downtown culture the great writers of the Meiji era were fascinated by \u2014 <em>Soseki Natsume, Ogai Mori <\/em>and <em>Yasunari Kawabata<\/em> all spent time here. As we pass through the streets there\u2019s more of a sense of life, with clothes drying and plants and small trees everywhere curated by residents. We pass a striking 20m <em>Himalayan cedar<\/em> in the Yanaka area, marking a fork in the road next to <em>Mikado Bakery<\/em> which began life as a small potted plant over a 100 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Towards <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kensetsu.metro.tokyo.lg.jp\/jimusho\/toubuk\/ueno\/en_index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ueno Park<\/a><\/em>, the nostalgic scenery begins to transition to an area where nature and culture intersect. During the Meiji era many of Japan\u2019s leading cultural institutions were built when this area developed as a centre for modernization: galleries, museums, concert halls, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmwa.go.jp\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>National Museum of Western Art<\/em> <\/a>designed by <em>Le Corbusier<\/em>. Along the outside of <em>Tokyo University of the Arts<\/em> they are currently replacing iron fences with over 40 varieties of plants to create a softer <em>Geidai Hedge<\/em>. <em>Ueno Park<\/em> is huge, with many of these institutions located within its grounds, or around the periphery. Within the park, the <em>kusunoki tree<\/em> of <em>Toshogu Shrine<\/em> now more than 600 years old, survived multiple earthquakes and the bombings of WWII. It was here before the shrine was built in 1651 and is among many historic trees including the <em>hinoki<\/em> planted by <em>President Ulysses S. Grant<\/em> on his visit in 1879.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0153_edit_2048-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0153_edit_2048-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0153_edit_2048-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0153_edit_2048-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0153_edit_2048-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0153_edit_2048.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ueno Onshi Park has many places to visit throughout the year, not only for cherry blossoms, but also for mukunoki and maple trees.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0173_edit_2048-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0173_edit_2048-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0173_edit_2048-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0173_edit_2048-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0173_edit_2048-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/386A0173_edit_2048.jpg 1365w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We picked up some local senbei, baked in a small store just outside the park, where there are many great options for lunch, including <em><a href=\"https:\/\/hagiso.com\/hagiso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hagiso Caf\u00e9 &amp; Gallery<\/a><\/em> (also a good place to stay), with a music playlist curated by artists and food using local ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few kilometers further marks the end of Section Four. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.senso-ji.jp\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senso-ji<\/a><\/em> <em>Temple<\/em> in <em>Asakusa<\/em> the heart of downtown Tokyo, built in 645AD and the oldest temple in the city. There are glimpses of <em>Tokyo Skytree<\/em> between buildings at various points along the route which avoids the crowded shopping streets of <em>Nakamise-dori<\/em> which often makes cycling impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of the area was destroyed by the firebombing of the second world war, including the temple itself.
