Creative cultures with a distinct aesthetic, sense of community and style. Often at the core of these cultures you find an energetic DIY (Do It Yourself) attitude, making the most out of every opportunity. Keisuke makes caps, cycling caps; “caps seeking possibilities”.

It all started back in Tokyo’s 2006 piste cycling boom. The bikes, bags and the caps were all new to Keisuke, who before too long was commuting to work on his own fixed gear bicycle. Around that time he found a handmade cycling cap in a used clothing store; a worn out cap from San Francisco based Chuey Brand. It was this DIY style along with the atmosphere of the cycle messenger culture at the time that energised Keisuke to buy his first sewing machine. With no prior sewing experience he intuitively dismantled — reverse engineered — the old cap using the separated parts as a pattern to make his own. As the classic story of a maker goes, you start by making your own cap, sooner or later you’re making caps for friends, then friends of friends and before too long selling caps in cycling shops around the city.

While orders from a new generation of cycling shops were coming in, Keisuke was still improving his design and sewing skills. Learning and gathering tips from established garment manufacturing professionals who pointed out his suspect stitching while gladly assisting him sow the parts he couldn’t do on his own machines, such as the eyelets indicative to caps.

In this way Velo Spica was pieced together. Vélo, meaning bicycle in French, and Spica, the brightest star in the constellation of Virgo. The etymology of this name comes from the Lantin & Greek word for spike or an ear of grain, which in Japanese has a good meaning of harvest and fertility. “It has a slightly spiky impression and I thought it would be an interesting name for my brand.”

Now years later Keisuke is still designing caps including many collaborations with brands, artists and organisations. It’s been years since I’ve climbed Mt. Takao; recalling the time when I blindly followed a group of elderly hikers up what must’ve been the easiest route. This time Keisuke led me up this favourite route, Inariyama.

As we leisurely hiked up we talked about MTV, 90’s New York skate scene, and environmental problems tied to the garment manufacturing industry. Keisuke explained that over one million tonnes of domestic clothing waste, including leftover fabric is produced every year. In response to this he started a new project called LEFTOVERS, which Keisuke says “sounds like a punk band somewhere”. The logo too is designed to reflect his DIY punk image. As of December 2020, almost 30m of leftover cloth and countless thread has been recycled into caps. Little by little he plans to continue making more recycled fabric caps as and when he is able to collect suitable unused materials.

Hiking down we talked about natural farming, baking bread and rule breaking. I don’t think Keisuke sees himself as a rule breaker, but over these two days I’ve come to see his positive DIY attitude akin to early 90’s skate or 00’s fixie scene. Where creativity and activity came together, invoking a reimagination of preconceived ideas. It just takes someone with the avidity to break a few rules. We’re not talking about a complete disregard for the rules, but a conscious subtle process of rule bending and culture blending in new directions. We agreed, when it comes to design, creativity and culture, a respectful understanding for the scene is paramount.

When it comes to production, it’s about making things that have never been made before. In my private life, I want to spend quality time with my family.

Our conversation continued in Toto soba. Over blows of noodle, vegetable tempura and local Takao “OH!Mountain” Beer, we talked about the design process and the importance of creative input. How your creative output is the direct result of your —creative— input. We surmised that design comes from the accumulation of your inputs, not constrained within the box of design, but from all aspects of life: books, films, music, art, nature, culture, even MTV music videos — conversation and quiet contemplation too.

Not a copy or misappropriation, but an acknowledgment and a blending of concepts, processes and feelings, the way you —specifically you— feel when hearing, watching or participating in culture. All this amalgamates into your own unique creativity. The chances of making something never seen before is less likely, if you don’t take any chances and bend some rules.

So, why not blend a cycling cap with a fly-fishing cap?

For the past few years I’ve been thinking of it as a way to maximise the enjoyment of getting to your destination.
