While it\u2019s a traditional technique and craft, the possibilities are continually being expanded by &#8220;Hikimono-master&#8221; Toshifumi Momose, who works out of his workshop in Shimizu-ku, Shizuoka City.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSCF0796-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73012\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSCF0796-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSCF0796-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSCF0796-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSCF0796-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSCF0796.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Canvas Series: A series of vessels made with wild Japanese cherry wood. Since cherry wood is expensive, he accepts orders for the product in its raw state, and the pieces arrive approximately one year later. Waiting for the material to become a vessel is part of the fun.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Momose&#8217;s introduction to the world of hewn wood came just as he was about to graduate from design school. It was a teacher that introduced him to the craft during a discussion about career opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI studied product design at school but found that I wanted to be a maker rather than a designer. I liked wood as a material and so I asked my teacher for advice. But did he ever experience any setbacks during that time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a process called &#8220;centering,&#8221; which is crucial to create the perfect circle form, but at first I just could not do it at all. Now that I think about it, if I had been able to do it right away, it wouldn\u2019t have posed a challenge to me and I would have become bored. However, it would be difficult to acquire all the necessary machinery, so I decided to collect them little by little. At that time, I thought about having my own workshop, but the cost to achieve that in the city would be very high. Since I liked the mountains, I looked for a place in the mountains and came across an old house that was built over a hundred years ago. Now we invite artists three times a year to create and exhibit their work with us. Also, they can shape this round part by themselves. The black color is dyed with tea leaves from Shizuoka, and the work was selected for the LEXUS NEW TAKUMI PROJECT.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe basic idea is to make something that people will enjoy, so I want the people who use it to be happy, and of course, I want the people I work with to be happy as well. He is now considering projects overseas, which have been postponed due to COVID. Born in 1983. After graduating from Shizuoka Design College, he studied under Masao Kishimoto and Masaki Kishimoto, both of whom are Shizuoka City&#8217;s traditional craft masters.
