Two days of wind and rain, the changing seasons battling it out around us as we cycled the islands of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Iki+Island\/@33.7837603,129.7210005,12z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x356a146cfbc0956f:0x225f69bf78cec8b1!8m2!3d33.788435!4d129.7137181!16zL20vMDVtZjlq!5m1!1e4?entry=ttu&amp;g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDQwMS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Iki<\/a>&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/sbBGuoH1XQDRCYJAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shikanoshima<\/a>. It seemed like spring was going to win, while we stripped into our white attire in preparation for a Misogi purification ritual in the wintry&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/SdyxtwDMv3g6Vst1A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kyushu sea<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600044-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600044-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600044-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600044-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600044.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My journey started with a short&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ana.co.jp\/en\/jp\/brand\/ana-future-promise\/co2-reduction\/2023-02-15-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ANA<\/a>&nbsp;propeller aircraft \u2014always thrilling\u2014 flight from Komatsu to Fukuoka, before meeting up with my fellow Papersky&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/en\/projects\/tour-de-nippon-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tour de Nippon<\/a>&nbsp;cyclists at Hakata Port. Our first stop was at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/morino.cafe_ten?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&amp;igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">morino cafe @ten<\/a>&nbsp;where over a wonderful lunch of local delicacies we got to know each other a little more. Formerly a barley shochu brewery \u2014Iki is famous for shochu\u2014 Island Brewery brings a fresh yet respectful new life to the atmospheric shopping street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of us buy souvenir bottles of beer from their beautiful taproom \u2014Golden Ale is popular and I can confirm it is delicious. Others squeeze into the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/u7zjp6tsuKCwq8Ac9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local confectionery<\/a>&nbsp;for freshly made Alps cakes \u2014the lemon cake was also very good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600031-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111012\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600031-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600031-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600031-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600031.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By this time we were wet and feeling a little cold. The winds were picking up so we collectively decided to call it a day, not before one final stop. Bikes abandoned, we took the heated \u2014lovely\u2014 support car to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikikankou.com\/spot\/10093\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saruiwa (Monkey Rock)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What can I say? It\u2019s a rock and there is no doubt it looks like a giant monkey sitting on the cliff edge, said to be \u201cbuilt by Gods to protect the island from the sea\u201d \u2014and beyond. With instagram, instagrammed \u2014several different poses accompanying the monkey including bananas and puckered lips in mock monkey kisses\u2014 we headed back to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iki.co.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hirayama Ryokan<\/a>&nbsp;for a well deserved bath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wet clothes off, Golden ale drank and into&nbsp;<em>\u201cone of the best old hot springs in Japan with a history of more than 1500 years\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014it was delightful, especially after a full day of riding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More Golden Ale on tap and the food \u2014such food\u2014 amazing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600037-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-111013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600037-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600037-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600037-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/resized_000119600037.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The morning started early with a 6:30am bath \u2014all to myself\u2014 followed by breakfast \u2014all together\u2014 then sadly it was time to depart this lovely Ryokan. I must say, some of the most welcoming, kind and genuinely helpful hotel owners I\u2019ve ever met. where we would find sakura and behold ancient relics,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/E3Tff9wfUrsgSRau9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a grocery store called Hiro<\/a>; to eat five types of seaweed and admire paintings, along with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/SUvXbPT6i6ko4SZk8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">landmarks of historical significance<\/a>; White shorts and white t-shirt, bought online just two days before, because it was only two days before that I realised I would be walking into the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had my reservations, but never once doubted I wouldn\u2019t follow the Shinto priest chanting into swash \u2014it was an honour. Some of us hesitated, some \u2014a surfer\u2014 dove straight in, others took their time until finally submerged themselves under the crashing waves. What followed was unexpected, as we returned to the beach, a euphoric sense of tingling warmth and well-being inside and across the body; across all bodies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were as one with each other and as one with the sea, the island and every living thing. Physical connection and community are utmost; something we shouldn\u2019t put off or make excuses for avoiding.
