Facing the Sea of Japan, Hagi still holds the deep imprint of its past as a castle-town. It was this quiet harmony between history and nature that illustrator Dean Aizawa chose to capture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything I painted for this issue of PAPERSKY was of places I\u2019ve never been,\u201d Aizawa says. \u201cI had no idea Yamaguchi was so worth walking. I\u2019d never seen Hagi\u2019s beautiful townscape or Nagato Yumoto\u2019s historic hot spring district until I received the reference photos. And yet, I think the paintings turned out pretty well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\u30ca\u30ac\u30c8_2_re_001-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-107418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\u30ca\u30ac\u30c8_2_re_001-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\u30ca\u30ac\u30c8_2_re_001-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\u30ca\u30ac\u30c8_2_re_001-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\u30ca\u30ac\u30c8_2_re_001.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Aizawa spent his school years at an international school in Tokyo and later graduated from an art university in San Francisco. Now based in Japan, he works as an illustrator and watercolor artist, focusing primarily on landscapes for magazines, advertising, and other media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I\u2019m painting landscapes, it\u2019s the light, the shadows, and the sense of atmosphere that guide me,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s probably why the piece showing Yamaguchi at dusk was the toughest this time\u2026 The reference photo I received was taken in daylight, so I had to reimagine the whole thing in the evening. I\u2019m confident about the others\u2014but that one, not so much,\u201d he laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\u30e4\u30de\u30b0\u30c1_2_001-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-107426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\u30e4\u30de\u30b0\u30c1_2_001-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\u30e4\u30de\u30b0\u30c1_2_001-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\u30e4\u30de\u30b0\u30c1_2_001-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\u30e4\u30de\u30b0\u30c1_2_001.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The piece Aizawa refers to is the one depicting <a href=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/en\/koukasha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kokasha<\/a>, a guesthouse quietly nestled on the outskirts of Yamaguchi. Beneath the beautiful gradients of a sunset sky, warm light spills from the windows of the refined building. Unlike digital work, watercolor doesn\u2019t allow for easy do-overs, yet despite Aizawa\u2019s modesty, he captures the stillness of a place awaiting travelers with striking clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes having a specific theme or constraint brings out more creativity,\u201d he says. \u201cOf course, there are jobs that aren\u2019t so fun. Of course, that happens,\u201d he laughs. \u201cBut PAPERSKY isn\u2019t one of them. I want to push myself further\u2026 hopefully next time I\u2019ll get to join the journey in person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSF1923_001-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-107430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSF1923_001-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSF1923_001-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSF1923_001-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSF1923_001.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After sharing his hopes for the future, Aizawa gave a live watercolor demonstration, sketching a street scene of Shibuya below. His well-worn tools showed signs of frequent use, evoking the minimalist gear of the ultralight hiking culture he\u2019s drawn to. In just about 15 minutes, the outline of Shibuya\u2019s cityscape emerged on a page of his Moleskine notebook. While there\u2019s a clear difference between a polished commission and an improvised sketch, the way he sees a landscape\u2014the way he captures light, mood, and movement\u2014remains consistent throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSF1960_001-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-107434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSF1960_001-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSF1960_001-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSF1960_001-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/papersky.jp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSF1960_001.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"last\">\u201cWatercolor painting, for me, is about capturing a landscape through color. Whether it\u2019s a dense cityscape like Shibuya or the nature-rich scenes of Yamaguchi, the approach doesn\u2019t change. He graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco with a degree in Fine Art Painting. His work spans magazines, advertising, and editorial illustration.
