The Ōhechi route, in particular, runs along the coastline and has long drawn travelers, artists, and poets with its mix of spiritual reverence and scenic beauty. Stretching roughly 120 km from Kii-Tanabe (Tanabe City) to Fudarakusan-ji Temple in Nachi, it’s longer than the more famous Nakahechi route and is known for its steep inclines (nicknamed the “48 Slopes”) and stunning interplay of sea and low mountain landscapes. On this journey, we hike just under 40 km from Kushimoto to Fudarakusan-ji.
</oembed>
