現代文化のノーザンライツ、カリフォルニア（no.25）

僕はバルチモアに生まれた。当時20歳だった母は、誰もが認めるウッドストック・ヒッピー。僕が3歳のころに家族でカリフォルニアへ渡り、最終的にビートニクとヒッピーとサーファーのメッカ、西海岸に移り住んだ。音楽、文学、食べ物、アート、そしてスポーツにいたるまで、現代文化の多くはビートとヒッピーとサーファーの影響をおおいに受けてきた。そしてこのすべてのムーヴメントに共通しているのが、北カリフォルニアの街々に深いルーツをもっているということ。ビートとヒッピーとサーファーがどれほど多くの影響を僕たちに及ぼしてきたか、そしていかに僕たちのカルチャーを感化しつづけているか、それを読者の皆さんに伝えるため、PAPER SKYはこの街へ旅立った。これらのムーヴメントがその基礎を築き、今もたしかに存在して人々を刺激している、数々の場所を垣間見るために。
今回の旅は、サンフランシスコのベジタリアン・レストラン「Greens」のブレックファストに始まる。ここは現代の「オーガニックフード」の元祖といっても過言ではない。そしてビートのメッカ「City Light Books」までぶらりと散歩。さらに地下鉄や車にちょっと乗ってバークレーまで足をのばし、ダスティン・ホフマンの映画『卒業』に登場する伝説的な本屋「Moe”s」に立ち寄る。そこから僕たちが向かったのが、じわじわと細胞増殖のように成長し、今やサーフィンとスケート・ムーヴメントのメッカともなったサンタ・クルーズ。ここにはアメリカでもっとも進んだ知的能力をもつ大学のひとつ、カリフォルニア大学サンタ・クルーズ校（カリフォルニアンたちはUCSCと呼んでいる）がある。その少し南にあるのがビック・サーと呼ばれる場所。かつてはここに、ビートとヒッピーとサーファーが、おいしい空気と世界有数の美しい自然を求めてやってきていた。このあたりは、スピリチュアルでオルタナティヴなライフスタイルを生みだした「エサレン研究所」の本拠地であり、ビートに大きな影響を与えた作家ヘンリー・ミラーの故郷でもあり、また「マーヴェリックス」と呼ばれるビッグウェイブと、この大波を初めて制覇したという伝説のサーファー、ジェフ・クラークに会いに、世界中からサーファーが集まるハーフムーンベイにもほど近い。そして、このオルタナティヴ・ムーヴメントの旅物語の締めくくりとして、現代のムーヴメントに欠かせないのが、フランシス・フォード・コッポラの驚くほどおいしいワイン「ルビコン」を生んだナパのワイナリーRubicon Estate」だ。
さあ、これで十分。手短かに言えば、今号のPAPER SKYを読んで、ビートニクスとヒッピーとサーファーのすべてを学んだら、あとはもう「トリップ」するだけ、ということ！

The Northern Light of Modern Culture ─ Northern California
I was born in Baltimore. At the time my mother was 20 yeas old and a certified Woodstock hippy. We went to California when I was three and eventually moved to the west coast- home to the Beatniks, Hippies and Surfers.
Much of modern culture weather it be music, literature, food, art or even sports has been greatly influenced by the Beat’s, Hippies and Surfers. And what all of these movements share are their deeply imbedded roots in the cities of Northern California. In order to give you a picture of how the Beatnik’s, Hippies and Surfers have influenced us so much and continue to influence our culture Paper Sky took a peak at the many Northern California places where these movements were founded and continue to exist and inspire.
The trip begins with breakfast in San Francisco at Greens, safe to say this place is the originator of modern day ‘Organic Food’, and then take a stroll over to the Beatnik mecca- City Lights Books. After a short subway ride we arrive in Berkley and at Moe’s books the legendary bookshop featured in Dustin Hoffman’s movie the Graduate. From there we wander down to Santa Cruz originally an incubating cell and now a mecca for both the surfing and skating movements and home to one of the most forward intellectually thinking universities in America the University of California, Santa Cruz or as Californian’s refer to it, UCSC. Just a bit below Santa Cruz is a place called Big Sur and this is where the Beat’s, Hippies and Surfers all came together to get a breath of air and some of the best nature in the world. The area is home to Esalen a mecca for spiritual and alternative lifestyle’s, it was also home to writer, Henry Miller one of the Beat’s major influences and close by in Half Moon bay surfers travel from the corners of the world to surf the Big Wave called Mavericks and speak to the legend who fist surfed it Jeff Clark. In closing a travel story on the alternative movements modern day movement would not be complete without a visit to Rubicon Estate in Napa home to Francis Ford Copala’s amazingly delicious wine Rubicon.
