PAPERSKY #20 AOMORI Get Warm in the Cold

Get Warm in the Cold
Here at Paper Sky we believe travel is about discovery and about challenging yourself to do new things and putting yourself in new situations. So with that in mind we decided to travel to one of the coldest most snow ridden places in Japan; precisely at the peak of the cold and snow season. This issue”s of destination is the land of the Blue Forest, AOMORI.
As the3 temperatures dipped below – 10 degrees we found the best places to stay warm were in some of Japan”s most amazing onsens (pg.30-45). Aomori”s onsens are literally a rainbow — ranging in colors from brown, green, blue, white, clear and red. Of course the ryokan”s cozy goose-down futons and great food also kept us warm as well.
AOMORI”s diverse food pallet is due to the regions geological position, with one side facing the Sea of Japan and the other side facing the Pacific Ocean and yet another side facing the Tsugaru Kaikyo. This positioning means that Aomori is fortunate to have some of the world”s top farmers, one of whom, Akinori Kimura, we interviewed for this issue (pg.64-65). Kimura San is also the only person in the world to make 100% organic apples.
On this trip when we stepped outside we did it in style, as we teamed up with North Face to go on a snow shoe expedition around Mt. Hakkoda (pg.90-95). Despite the 40 inches of snow, we were able to hike about the mountain as if it were spring, and after the exercise we were ready once again to recharge in the onsen. The beauty of the experience is indescribable — it was like walking around heaven. A heaven filled with Blue Forest. Welcome to Aomori.
