The Sea Shapes Australian Lifestyles

, 2005/10/25

For issue #15 we went for an ocean drive in Australia, the land down under. We were in search of the sea and how the sea shapes the lifestyles of Australians. We took the coastal highway from Brisbane down to Melbourne and between the strong blue skies and the Bondi blue sea we were totally surrounded by blue. Big and blue in Australia is probably the best way to capture the mood of our road trip. While we passed by old towns, new towns, big towns and small towns we discovered the country through our car windows, gas stations, and of course all the people and places we met along the coastal route. The following is a brief list of some of the things we would like to share with you and remember into eternity.

Red Rock Deli Chips (especially Lime and Black Pepper flavor), Mount Franklin Australian water, friendly Fishermen with all the time in the world that let you pull in their 5kg salmon, amazing stars at night (including a full on view of the Milky Way), the overwhelming number of beautiful beaches, the fact that coffee lattes are so creamy and sweet, the countless varieties of Yukatalipitus trees, bar girls with sexy tattos above their hips, flower shops with flowers you’ve never seen in your life, Nat Young, Bob Mctavish, Chyan Horne, the fact that on-coming cars blink their lights to let you know you will be coming up on a patrol car, New Catsle, the ridiculus scene of thousands of white joggers in the city of Sydney, the amazing number of Greeks and Greek food, government-sponsored bush parties or raves, truckers in neon shirts, Pelicans that sit on the lamp posts as if they were pigeons in any other country, the following restaurants all with an ocean view: Rae’s, Bather’s Pavilion, Stokehouse, The Baths and A La Grecque, birds that speak languages you’ve never heard before, freeways that are like go-cart racing courses, morning trance in eight out of ten cafes before 11:00 am, girls schools with uniforms more colorful then most of the Australian bird population, the fact that eighty percent of the newspaper is devoted to sports, the unity between kids and kangaroos on the soccer field, shark nets, Mick Pearce (one of the world’s most amazing architects) and his new project the CH-2 Green Building (www.melbourne.vic.gov.au), the 40-minute ferry ride across Port Phillip Bay, the fact that everyone seems to always be sticking their thumbs up in place of the word OK, the road signs (especially the kangaroo and wombat signs), cricket games on TV, Australian men who despite it being winter are mentally unwilling to wear warm clothes and walk around in shorts and short sleeve shirts, the fact that the Australians call Burger King “Hungry Jacks”, the heavenly large number of lawn bowling establishments…

So you ask how after only one trip we were able to unlock so many of Australia’s best kept secrets? We took to the road! Specifically we took to the Ocean Road, driving down the coast from Brisbane to Melbourne and covering over 2,200 kilometers and stopping at all the small towns in-between in search of three things:

1) to find unique PAPERSKY-ish places to stop
2) to meet a few of Australia’s legendary surfers
3) to feast at the best ocean view restaurants.

So get to Australia, rev your engines and buckle up for the most spectacular coastal drive in the world.
